Frequently Asked Questions

1.      What do you accept at the Recycling Center?

We accept many kinds of recyclable items, including bundled newspapers, cardboard and mixed paper, bottles and cans (comingle), electronic devices, concrete (in very limited quantity), any type of metal, tires (with no rims), used motor oil (in sealed containers), appliances, automotive batteries, and  name-brand ink cartridges.

2.      When does my garbage get picked up?

O ur garbage contractor (Roselle) removes regular household garbage curbside twice a week for each  residence (either Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Friday depending on where you live in town.)   They should take up to three cans at a time as long as they do not weigh more than 50 pounds each.

3.      What does the garbage contractor pick-up on my recycling Wednesday?

The contractor takes all co-mingled glass and plastic bottles, as well as aluminum and tin cans.  Plastic  are not allowed and will not be picked up.  All recycling must be loose in the can or appropriately bundled.  All plastic must have a “1” or a “2” located on the bottom.  They will also take cardboard and mixed paper, as long as it is broken down and bundled.  Bundles should not exceed 12 inches in height.

4.      How do I get rid of bulk items?

Our garbage contractor will remove up to three (3) of your bulk items curbside every other Wednesday that is not your recycling Wednesday.  This includes furniture, carpeting, wood, and plastics that are not marked with a “1” or a “2” for comingle. Larger items may need to be cut or broken down.

5.      How do I get rid of metals, appliances and electronics?

We ask that you bring these items to the Recycling Center (making sure all refrigerator doors are removed for safety reasons).  If you are unable to get these items to the yard, please call (732-264-1133) and we will arrange a pick-up for you.

6.      What type of electronics do you accept?

We accept all kinds of electronic devices for recycling, including but not limited to, televisions, computers, microwaves, air conditioners, cameras, telephones and copiers.

7.      What do I do with branches, brush and leaves?

Our garbage contractor will remove up to three (3) bundles of branches/brush on your second garbage pick-up of the week, either Thursday or Friday depending on where you live in the Borough.  Bundles should be no longer than four feet in length and weigh no more than 50 pounds. Nothing bigger than 3 inches in diameter will be accepted. If your branches are too small to bundle, you may place them in a can, but please don’t make it too heavy.  The Borough collects leaves n brown bags iin the Fall.  At other times of the year, they may be brought to the Recycling Yard.

8.      What if I have too many items to put out for bulk?

You have two options.  You could take your bulk to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center located  in Tinton Falls (732-683-8686).  They may charge a nominal fee for accepting these items, and we  suggest that you call first.  Also, you could get a dumpster, for which you would need a permit.  Please call Code Enforcement at 732-586-8686 if you choose this option.

9.      I have paint cans to dispose of.  Do you accept these?

We NEVER accept paint cans.  If the cans are from latex paint, they can be disposed of with your  “regular” garbage once they are completely dried up.  Kitty litter is an inexpensive way to speed up this  process.  Monmouth County does have a Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Tinton Falls   (732-683-8686).  They accept many kinds of hazardous waste that we do not accept.  Appointments are required.

10.      When should I place my items curbside?

Please always place trash, bulk, and recycling curbside the night before a scheduled pick-up.  Our   garbage contractor begins work early in the morning and frequently changes their route for many   different reasons.

11.      How can I get rid of household batteries?

We do not accept regular household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, etc.)  These can just be thrown away  with your regular household garbage.

12.      Can non-residents use the Union Beach Recycling Center?
NO!   It is for Union Beach residents ONLY When you visit, please stop at the office first and sign  in.  Please have identification ready if asked.
